Russell Reid Completes Underwater Jetting

Before we can describe exactly how we helped, we must first answer the question: What is a “Multi-Species Aquaculture Facility” in the first place?  In short, this is an establishment located in Cape May dedicated to the research of marine life on the New Jersey shore.  Under the direction of marine biologists at Rutgers University, the facility is designed to study and promote the cultivation of finfish and shellfish industries in the state.  This research center helps us cultivate clams, trout, oysters, koi, tilapia, and hundreds of other aquatic species that can be farmed in large scale for general consumption.  So, why was Russell Reid needed?  Here’s why.
The facility has two large ponds with 26” inlet pipes extending from tanks at its facility on shore into the water.  These are very big pipes.  Over time, the pipes had become clogged with mussels, algae, barnacles, and other underwater growth.  And just like the piping in your house, they had to be cleaned out.  This, however, was not a simple matter of running a ‘snake’ and clearing out a simple clog.  In this case, the inner piping had become encrusted and clogged along its entire length with aquatic life that clung on stubbornly.  The mussels showed some real muscle.

Russell Reid met with the client, defined what needed to be done, and developed a plan of action.   We brought lengthy hoses and an air compressor to the site so we could Jet Vac the pipes.  A professional diver was used to insert the jets into the submerged pipes where they discharged into the ponds, and we set the compressors to provide just enough high pressure air to clear the piping of the marine life yet avoid any damage to the piping and the fittings themselves.  We cleaned the piping a distance of 120 feet and helped the facility continue on with its mission.

The job took the better part of a day to complete, and Russell Reid’s technicians handled the work with great expertise and careful attention to the clients’ needs.  We cleared the piping of all clogs without incident and earned the gratitude and respect of a new client.   As is so often the case, the key to success in this project was an open line of communication with the client and good prior planning.
